about aromatherapy

Aromatherapy today, is undergoing a renaissance, led in this century by innovative European scientists and practitioners. In fact, the word “Aromatherapy” was first coined in 1937 by Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, a French cosmetic chemist, who accidentally discovered the effectiveness of lavender oil on burns after injuring his hand in a small lab explosion. Although Gattefosse deserve credit for his vision in making the connection between aromatics and therapy, it was Marguerite Maury, who realized the significance of applying essentials oil externally (diluted in vegetable oil), in combination with massage as a way of normalizing the unbalanced functions in the whole person.

In short, “Aroma” is simply a fragrance and “therapy” a treatment. The fragrance arises from the active constituents produced from plant life; and therapy its use in bathing, inhalation and massage.

Essential oils are fragrant, highly concentrated, volatile (evaporative) extracts from flowers, leaves & stem, fruits, seeds, fruit peel, roots, woods, herbs and grasses, needles & twigs, resins & barks to create a wide variety of essential oils. Each essential oil has its own benefits to which the body and mind respond. These plant essences are extracted mostly by steam distillation and are soluble in alcohol and fixed oils. Most essences are clear; however a few are color.

Ever since the time of the Pharaohs, essential oils of flowers and plants have been used in cosmetics, massage oils and for medicines to promote health, beauty and well being. Scent pots containing ointments made with essential oils were discovered in the tomb of King Tutankhamen, who lived in Egypt over 3000 years ago. Modern scientific research continues to confirm the ancient knowledge that early civilizations knew instinctively, revealing the amazing power of scents to influence our moods and emotions, relax, invigorate, uplift, or balance the body, mind and spirit.

As the world’s doctors and scientist awaken to the beneficial effects of aromatherapy and essential oils, so we can use these precious gifts of nature to enhance our health and life styles. Aromatherapy can reduce stress and tension, contribute to beautiful and healthy toned skin, relieve pain and aching muscles, and create a relaxed and fragrant atmosphere and refresh and stimulate your mind. By using natural fragrant oils in our everyday lives we are helping our own personal well being whilst also contributing to a healthier environment and lifestyle for many people throughout the world.
